Stephen has served as the Chairman of the Nacogdoches County Democratic Party for four years, is an active member of the Friends of Nacogdoches ISD, and chairs the education committee for the Nacogdoches-area chapter of the NAACP (Unit 6207).
He and his wife, Carrie, both teach eighth graders at McMichael Middle School. There he represents his campus with the Texas AFT, serves on the Nacogdoches District Advisory Committee, and represents the campus faculty at the monthly Superintendent Luncheon. He and Carrie have two sons, Isaiah and August, who are both students in Nacogdoches ISD. Beyond activism, teaching, and family, his hobbies include nonfiction reading, long-distance running, playing and watching basketball, and occasionally sharpening his chops on the saxophone.
Stephen and his wife Carrie met as undergrads at Texas A&M University and were married in 2000. After living in Denton County for five years where their two sons were born, they moved back to Carrie's native East Texas and have now lived in Nacogdoches almost a decade. Carrie is an avid reader, long distance runner, and Eight Grade English/Language Arts teacher at McMichael Middle School in Nacogdoches ISD. Isaiah is currently in 7th Grade at McMichael, plays the trumpet in the school band, and is on the UIL Art team. August is completing his final year at Raguet Elementary and likes to run long distance and participate in Robotics, UIL Maps/Graphs/Charts, and the Gifted and Talented program. Both boys enjoy computers, are progressive-minded Democrats, and think their dad is a decently-cool political nerd.
